Challenge one

Motivate customer service representatives to achieve a combination of monitoring, attendance, and productivity goals. The company operates call centres with over a million calls a year.

In the first month, the goal focused on attendance and monitoring. The second month highlighted monitoring and increased productivity and the third month recognised excellent attendance, monitoring and outstanding productivity.

An incentive program was devised using $100 gift certificates as rewards for customer service representatives who achieved the monthly performance goals.

Results

For perfect attendance and monitoring the first month, there was an 11% increase in the number of eligible employees over the previous incentive system. For monitoring and outstanding productivity the second month, there was a 2% increase and a 4% increase in the number of customer service representatives rewarded for excellent attendance, monitoring, and outstanding productivity.

Challenge two

A brokerage firm wished to create a customer acquisition program. New customers who opened an online brokerage account were emailed a $50 gift certificate.

Results

Online accounts increased 37% more than another campaign the previous year and 87% of the new customers acquired from the program are actively using the brokerage service.

Challenge three

A large hospital was looking for an appealing gift to thank employees for their efforts over the past year. They send a letter to all staff members thanking them for their efforts throughout the year and their contribution to the hospital’s success. After the letter had been sent, managers hand delivered gift certificates to employees in November to give them the opportunity to redeem the certificates for the festive season.

Results

The staff were delighted with their certificates and the hospital repeated the program the following year.

Challenge four

A large transport company with national operations wished to decrease employee injury and increase workplace safety awareness. They designed a new safety promotion to educate and remind employees about industrial safety. Industrial employees in the section who reach six months without an injury received a $100 gift certificate.

Results

Management report a decrease in industrial accidents compared to the same time in the previous year. Gift certificates were given to over one hundred employees with no injury incidents.

Challenge five

A national liquor distributor wanted a program to increase sales through retail outlets and created an incentive program. In return for larger store displays or increased stock levels, representatives could reward wholesalers with gift certificates. Sales reps were given marketing materials with simple instructions for ordering the gift certificates. Monthly billing reports were broken out by individual account and included the representative's name, distributor name and order amount.
